"At the crossroads of international trade" seminar

The Centre for International Economy (CEI) of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship hosted the “At the crossroads of international trade” seminar on 19 September. The Secretary for International Economic Relations, Horacio Reyser, and the Director of the CEI, Celina Pena, opened the event, which took place at the auditorium of the Argentine Foreign Service Institute (ISEN). The seminar was structured around two panels devoted to the analysis of the current geopolitical context and prevailing trade tensions. The first session featured Alejandro Corbacho (UCEMA), Roberto Bouzas (UDESA), Eduardo Tempone (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship) and Félix Peña (ICBC Foundation), while the second session featured David Laborde and Valeria Piñeiro (IFPRI), Nelson Illescas (INAI), Agustín Tejeda (Buenos Aires Grain Exchange) and Ricardo Rozemberg (UNSAM). During the seminar, participants analysed the shifts in relationships of power and their influence on the global economy. Within this context, reference was made to the recent G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting, which acknowledged the need to strengthen dialogue and actions to mitigate risks and enhance confidence in international trade. In this regard, there was agreement on the urgent need to revitalize the multilateral trading system. In addition, research results on the impact of unilateral trade measures on the world's economy and, especially, on the Argentine agriculture sector, were presented. Mauricio Mesquita Moreira (IDB) delivered the closing remarks, in which he highlighted the need to move forward with the convergence of regional markets so as to maximize profits in trade. The Undersecretary for Commercial Strategy and Economic Promotion, Javier Arana, closed the seminar.
